Seven Piece Set of Repoussé Gold Saddle Fittings (600 - 800)
Early Tang Dynasty (ca. 7th-8th century), China
This extraordinary seven piece set of repoussé gold saddle fittings is a great rarity made for the highest of royalty.
Rank privileges would allow the next level of nobility to have gold on silver fittings with slightly lesser nobility having solid silver and then gilt bronze or gilt copper fittings. These types of fittings have been found around the Xining area in Qinghai Province, although the gilt silver and gilt copper appear to have been found additionally in the adjacent provinces of Gansu and Xinjiang.
On this exceptional set, there are extensive depictions of zoomorphic forms amongst vine and floral motifs including two front facing guardian beasts. The front fork of the saddle was inlaid with turquoise eyes, one of which is replaced. An additional example of the esteem in which these artifacts were held is the use of gold nails to connect the gold to gold. Additionally, silver nails were used to connect the fittings to the wood frame.
These are among the earliest known gold saddle fittings ever found in China.

Saddle Ornaments

In the early tenth century, northern China came under the control of the Qidan Liao, a nomadic people of Central Asia. In 1005, after decades of warface, the Liado concluded a treaty with the Chinese Northen Song dynasty that stipulated diplomatic gifts to be presented to the Liao, including the type of saddle ornaments seen here. The Liao themselves had continued Tang dynasty styles in metalworking, including in engraved and repoussé silver, and sets of similiar ornametns have been excavated in Liao tombs. Among these are ornaments decorated with dragons chasing a flaming jewel meant for a nobleman, and others with phoenixes and auspicious designs, intended for a woman.
