A Mamluk or Ottoman steel Helmet
circa 1500 - 1550
of conical form with upright rim and sloping sides ending with a knop finial, stamped with the Ottoman Arsenal of Hagia Eirene, rim with a band of small pierced holes, further holes half way up the rim
22.5 cm. diam.
Footnotes
Provenance:
Acquired in 1960.
This helmet is very similar in form to an example in the Furusiyya Art Foundation Collection, see Bashir Mohamed, The Arts of the Muslim Knight: the Furusiyya Art Collection, Milan, 2007, p.317, and would have carried the same elaborate metalwork, as evinced by nail-holes half way up the rim.
